Deadline for Submission: 29 February 2024

About:

Large Language Models (LLMs) are currently being applied in a wide variety of domains. In the legal domain, LLMs are increasingly being used in diverse tasks by researchers, including statutory reasoning, annotation of legal text, contract drafting, legal text generation, as well as others. Despite cautions issued by the U.S. Federal judiciary and guidelines established by the European Bar Association, legal practitioners have begun to rely upon LLMs as well. However, there continue to be concerns about various potential risks that can arise from the application of LLMs in the legal domain. For instance, LLMs are known to generate inconsistent text and exhibit various social biases that can be particularly harmful. These issues underscore the importance of empirical investigations and evaluation of LLM models that are presently being developed and applied to legal use cases.

This special issue of the journal aims to produce a set of seminal papers that focuses on the application and impact of LLMs in the legal domain, as well as the ethical issues and risks that are potentially involved.
